Budgeting Considerations for Cabinets in a Remodel

New cabinets can consume a large portion of your remodeling budget, so it pays to choose wisely. There is a wide array of designs and styles to choose from and endless configurations. However, cabinets should be chosen early on in the remodel design phase so that you don’t go over budget and are designing other elements around your chosen cabinets.

Laminate finishes will cost less than solid wood, but may not be as durable. With solid wood, you’ll need to consider a finish that takes into account heat, humidity, wear and tear, and durability. Plus, when calculating costs, don’t figure to take hardware into account – knobs and handles can be very costly and should be chosen early on to coordinate with your other elements.

Contractor Tip: Consider Refinishing Before Buying New

If you like the current configuration of your cabinets, but you’ve got wear and tear showing, you may be able to go with a face-lift instead of total replacement. Corvus Construction can refinish the bases and doors or refinish just the bases and replace the doors with new or upgraded models. This can often be more cost-effective than purchasing all-new cabinets.

In many cases, a high quality refinish of existing cabinets with upgraded hardware can create a fresh look without the expense of total cabinet refinishing. In a kitchen, replacing cabinets will be costlier because there are more of them. For a bathroom, your budget typically won’t be hit as hard by replacing rather than refinishing cabinets and may need replaced if there is water damage.

Prefabricated vs. Custom Cabinets

Another consideration when choosing kitchen or bathroom cabinets is whether to buy prefabricated or go with custom cabinetry. Prefabricated cabinets are those that are already constructed and are installed in the configuration you desire. You may have seen these at The Home Depot or IKEA. There are also specialty shops that sell prefabricated cabinets.

In many cases, prefabricated cabinets will work but for unusual architecture or non-traditional designs, customizing some (or all) of the cabinets may be required. The upside of custom cabinets is that they are made to perfectly fit your space. The downside of custom cabinets is the cost. You may be able to mitigate the cost by combining prefabricated with custom cabinets.
